BREAKING NEWS: Gunmen Invade Birnin Gwari Township In Kaduna State, Bomb Police Station And Banks

SaharaReporters has just received information from students living in  Birnin Gwari town in Kaduna State to the effect that heavily armed bandits took over the  Police Station in the area and burnt it down after about two hours of gun battle with troops.
The police station is completely razed in an attack that started at midnight, according to the source.
Banks and other public buildings were reportedly  bombed along with the Police Station.
The source who claimed to have witnessed the attack said the  bandits also planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that exploded  simultaneously in addition to  sporadic gun shots.
The source also said that the whole area was sealed by the unidentified gunmen whose number could not be ascertained because of they came in the dark.  Several police officers and  some of the  bandits are believed to have died in the attack  which  lasted about two hours.
“We are trapped, and under fear, we need  military support to, if not there is no certainty on our lives. As I speak, they are still firing”, he said.
In October, 2012, bandits invaded the town killing some 20 worshippers leaving a  Mosque in an early morning raid in the area.
Calls made to spokespersons of the army and police were not returned as at the time of this report.

Last year SaharaReporters Did a reasoned exposee on the problem of armed banditry in Birnin Gwari LGA: Seee report below:
Dogon Dawa Killings: Terrorists Believed To Be Bunkering In Kaduna Forests; Military Considering Armed Response
A SaharaReporters investigation in Dogon Dawa community, where over 20 people were killed in a mosque, and in other neighboring villages in Birnin Gwari local government area of Kaduna State, indicates that the suspected terrorists may be camping out under the cover of dense forests in Kaduna State.
Senior State Security Service personnel who had previously studied the area and made several for immediate action, confirmed to our reporters SaharaReporters the suspects are taking advantage of the forest, which borders Plateau, Niger, Kano, Zamfara and Katsina States, to hide.
A senior police officer also told our reporter that the immediate solution is military action, in which helicopters would be used to support ground troops.  Barring this, he said "they will continue to carry out their attacks and what we witnessed last Sunday [may be] just a joke.”
A SaharaReporters team which drove through villages in Niger State to Birnin Gwari spoke with villagers before arriving at the national park in a serene area called Kamuku.
The suspected terrorists, according to the locals, are heavily armed and live mainly in the thick forest except when they are traveling outside of the terrain.
They added that the suspected terrorists have established tents and other mobile settlements inside the forest, pointing out that some of them are foreigners while others are simply mercenaries who specialize in carrying out killings and counter attacks in Kaduna State and other parts of the North.
The locals told our reporters that the criminal elements also double as armed robbers to obtain money for their running costs and upkeep.
One of the villagers, speaking through an interpreter, said, “There are strange men inside the forests, they are camping in there and at times you will see them carrying their luggage on motorbikes before melting into the forests.  There is nothing we can do, but they have never attacked us, but they have been targeting villages that formed vigilantes against their operations in the area. They do not talk with anyone.  And we heard that they usually block the road and rob motorists.”
A security official who spoke on condition of anonymity further explained, “The whole area is under threat, these people come here from hundreds of kilometres away, through the bush, from forests in Zamfara or Katsina. They get here well-armed and know the terrain. We need ground troops and air support to raid and survey the whole forests. It is an urgent exercise.”
There were differing views in Dogon Dawa community where over 20 people were butchered on Sunday. Muhammad, who is a relative of the late vigilante leader, Ahmadu Aliyu, said that the armed robbers came to kill their father because he was a thorn in their flesh.
"These people are organized terrorists or militia; we know armed robbers cannot carry out this act in this manner.  They came around 4:30 am and left around 6:30 am.”
Another young boy who spoke in tears said, “They are thieves tormenting us and all the travelers in the Birnin Gwari routes. But it is obvious they engaged services of experienced killers and they wrote us that they will come, but the authorities did not care until they struck.”
SaharaReporters saw armed soldiers and anti-riot policemen fully stationed around the area, but none of them agreed to talk to our reporter.

EFCC Arrests Two Over $240,000 Illegal Cash

                      Moghalu Maduakonam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC ), has separately arrested two men, Moghalu Maduakonam and Esho Femi David, for attempting to smuggle $240,000 out of the country.
The commission said in a statement that the arrests were made on January 23 at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.   Maduakonam was travelling to Dubai, United Arab Emirates with $200,000.00, which he failed to declare; while David, who was travelling to Istanbul, Turkey, declared only $5,000 out of $40,050 in his possession.
In a related issue, the EFCC said that a Federal High Court sitting Abuja, presided over by Justice Adamu Bello, on Wednesday convicted one Mallam Abulrasheed Ibrahim on charges of money laundering.
According to the EFCC, Ibrahim was arrested on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by operatives of the commission as he prepared to board a Dubai, United Arab Emirates-bound Ethiopian airline, at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport.  He had declared the sum of $45,000, but a search revealed an additional $143,858.
Justice Adamu Bello ruled that 25% of the total sum, which is $188,858, be forfeited and paid into the Federal Government Treasury by the court accountant, and the remaining money returned to the convict through his counsel.

Nigerian Man Sentenced To Life In Jail For 2010 Independence Day Bombing

A man described as an accomplice to MEND's leader, Henry Okah in the 2010 Independence Day Bombing in Abuja has been found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja today.
Edmund Ebiware was arrested on October 2, 2010 at the Bolingo Hotel by the Nigerian secret police for failing to provide the government information about the planning and eventual execution of the bombing that killed 12 people on October 1st 2010 at the Federal capital city of Abuja.
Justice Gabriel Kolawole presiding at the trial gave a three hour ruling squarely blaming Ebiware for failure to disclose the planned acts of terrorism against the Nigerian state to the appropriate authorities.
The conviction and sentencing of Ebiware did not go down well with him as he became agitated and fought off security agents as they dragged him off to prison.
The accused leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, Henry Okah, was also last week convicted for the bombing by a South African high court in Gauteng. He will be sentenced in February 2013.

Ex - Presidential Aspirant Arrested By The EFCC For Operating Illegal Taskforce

A former presidential aspirant under the platform of the Nigeria Liberation Party, NPL, OsitaEmmanuel Okereke, has been arrested and interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for operating an illegal task force, running a recruitment racket, extortion and  obtaining money by false pretense.
Okereke is allegedly the brain behind a syndicate whose members masquerade as self- “National Task Force” set up to combat Importation and Smuggling of Small Arms, Ammunition and Light Weapons.

The EFCC said the syndicate, which maintains offices in different parts of the country defrauded unsuspecting members of the public by deceitfully selling recruitment forms to them at the cost ofN5,000 each under the pretext of offering them employment with the federal government.
The scam was uncovered through intelligence report, the commission said, and after weeks of painstaking surveillance, it stormed the office of the syndicate at the federal secretariat complex,Enugu, and arrested the zonal co-coordinator, Obinna C. Onyekwelu, along with nine others.
The other suspects are: Ajuani Uchenna, Emmanuel Ngwu, Kenneth Ambrose, Ogunjimi Charles,Uzoamaka Ikwunne, Chinwe Ogbu, Onyia Fidelia, Eze Amobi and Anioke Obinna.
The anti-corruption agency says several documents and cash were recovered after a search and the suspects have since been released on administrative bail after making useful statements.

Okereke claimed that his task force was duly recognized by the government but the commission’s investigation showed that there was no evidence of such registration.

Folorunsho Alakija Takes Oprah's Place As Richest Black Woman In The World

Oprah Winfrey has lost her long-held title as the richest black woman in the world to a Nigerian oil tycoon, according to a report by an African business magazine.

Edging out Oprah is Folorunsho Alakija, a 61-year-old woman from Nigeria who is reportedly worth at least $3.2 billion, or roughly $500 million more than Oprah's $2.7 billion net worth, Ventures Africa reported. Alakija is the founder and owner of Famfa Oil, which owns a 60 per cent interest in OML 127, an offshore oil field that produces roughly 200,000 barrels of oil per day and is worth an estimated $6.44 billion. Also a fashion designer and philanthropist, Alakija is married and has four grown sons, as well as one grandchild. She owns at least $100 million in real estate and $46 million private jet, Ventures Africa reported.Born into a wealthy Nigerian family, Alakija started out as a secretary in the mid 1970s at the now defunct International Merchant Bank of Nigeria.
Several years later, she quit her job and moved to London, where she studied fashion design. She later returned to Nigeria and launched her fashion line, Supreme Stitches, which caters to upscale, high-society women.

While she was building her name as a fashion designer, Alakija in 1993 applied for an Oil Prospecting License -- an expensive permit that allows for oil exploration in a specified area.

The Nigerian government granted her request and allocated a 617,000-acre block of land to Alakija for oil exploration -- but she knew nothing about finding and extracting oil.

So in September of 1996, she appointed Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited -- a subsidiary of Texaco -- to act as a technical adviser for her business.

In 2000, Star Deep Petroleum determined that Alakija's land contained an excess of one billion barrels of oil. When this was discovered, the Nigerian government tried to re-acquire half of the oil-rich block it had sold to Alakija.

The Nigerian government was successful and Alakija lost control of all but 10 percent of her oil company until 2012, when Nigeria's highest court reversed the government's actions.

With Alakija now back in control of 60 percent of the oil company, her net worth has shot up to $3.2 billion, an estimate that Ventures Africa calls extremely conservative.

Alakija's sons now run Famfa Oil and her husband, Modupe Alakija, is the chairman of the company.

She recently purchased a $102 million property at One Hyde Park in London, as well as a Bombardier Global Express 6000 jet, which she bought earlier this year for $46 million.

Her charity, Rose of Sharon Foundation, gives out small grants to widows and orphans.

Kano State Government Bans Motorcycle Passengers

Last Saturday’s devastating attack on the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, which claimed the lives of six persons, has prompted the State government to ban motorcycle passenger transportation in Kano metropolis and the Local Government Areas.
In a broadcast to the people yesterday by the Acting Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, announced the ban, which will affect both private and commercial on motorcyclists, and take effect on January 24.
According to Ganduje, who spoke in Hausa, “this action by the state government became necessary in order to secure the state from the unnecessary security challenges of recent times.
“We will also ensure that every motorcycle is duly registered so as to ensure the safety of the owner and the security of the state. And we are also calling on the motorcyclists—both private and commercial— to go their respective Local Government Areas and register.”
He said the new policy follows consultations over the security situation and the commercial viability of the state.
“The government now deems it right that as from Thursday, motorcyclists would be stopped from carrying passengers within the metropolis and the Local Government Areas.”
It would be recalled that beginning on January 20, 2011, when Islamic fundamentalists staged multiple attacks in Kano that left over 300 people dead and several others wounded, there has been a spate of terrorist attacks by gunmen using motorbikes.

18 Killed In Borno Market Attack-AP

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — A deputy governor in Nigeria says 18 people were killed in an attack on a local market there.
Borno state deputy Gov. Zanna Mustapha said Tuesday he received the information from a local village chief in the village of Damboa. Mustapha said local chief Abba Ahmed said the attack happened late Monday.
Residents and the deputy governor said the violence started after the local market banned a group of hunters from selling "bush meat" from slaughtered monkeys and other creatures. Local Muslims decline to eat it because of their religious convictions.
Security officials on Monday had said no one was killed in the attack. Damboa, in a rural part of the state, is difficult to reach.
The region is under attack by a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram.

Soldiers Storm Suspected Gun Runner’s Home In Kaduna, Three Months After Court Freed Him

Nuhu Mohammed Marafa and son paraded for gun-running last year

About three months after he was set free by a Kaduna court following the discovery of weapons and military uniforms, and being linked by the Nigeria Army with terrorism activities, a combined team of security operatives in Kaduna today stormed the home of Comrade Nuhu Mohammed and over 100 houses in his neighborhood.
A senior official of the State Security Service, speaking on condition of anonymity, told SaharaReporters that the team stormed the Tirkania area following a tip-off, but that findings will not be revealed until consultations and further investigations in other Kaduna locations are completed.
The source said that while there were some facts in the tip received, the service will only shed more light at the end of its investigations.
The source further added that Comrade Mohammed, alias Babawo, who was once the leader of the Petrol Tankers union, is presently campaigning to be elected again and may be indulging in several security breaches in the area.
It would be recalled that Mohammed was first arrested along with his son last year in January 2012, after which Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Edun, then assistant director of public relations of the First Division of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna, stated as follows:
“The activities for which Alhaji Nuhu Mohammed Marafa attracted the attention of the Nigerian Army bordered on issues of national security.
Specifically, the army claimed it has to do with gun-running and suspected connection with and support for a terrorist group. After extensive surveillance, troops of 1 Division of Nigerian Army during the night of 13/14 January 2011, conducted a cordon-and-search operation on the compound of Alhaji Nuhu Mohammed Marafa, located at Tirkania, opposite IBBL Kaduna. Before troops could gain entry into the compound, there was a gunshot fired at the soldiers from the compound. It was later revealed that the shot was fired allegedly by Yusuf Nuhu Mohammed, the son of Alhaji Nuhu Mohammed Marafa. Yusuf escaped with the weapon by scaling the perimeter wall of the compound.”
The Nigerian Army gave a list of the following weapons reportedly found in their search of Mr. Marafa’s home during his last arrest:
